  1. Is there a way to have it warn you about explosives in your loadout? I was playing on a pistols only server and it told me to take flashbangs out because they weren't allowed. Server also automatically banned people for using grenades. It was nice getting a warning though, since I didn't know you couldn't use flashbangs and I was able to change my loadout before I got in any trouble.

Also, in this mode, I assume if you're a zombie you still get to respawn right? So if you're the first zombie and you get killed before turning anyone else into a zombie, you just respawn as a zombie and keep going?

    This sounds amazing.

  2. I'll have to watch the videos when I get home from work, but I already know my personal opinions on DLC. I believe that maps and gamemodes should be 100% free, since having them paid will fragment the playerbase. I would be immensely interested in seeing info about whether having base game + premium DLC vs. a higher priced game w/ all content generates more revenue over time. On one hand, having a lower cost base game could theoretically allow more people to get into the game since there's a lower entry barrier. On the other, knowing every single person who buys the game can always play with any other person who buys the game means you always have the maximum number of servers available to play on, which increases the longevity of the game.

I'm also cool with paid cosmetic DLC. I don't give a crap about anything cosmetic. I think everyone should allow it. If people want to spend money to have a crazy colored tank, more power to 'em. I'm floored by what people spend on CS:GO skins. Since it has zero impact on anyone else, cosmetic DLC can generate revenue without causing controversy. If it makes people happy and can help offset some of the cost of developing the game, why not?

Now we come to weapons/vehicles/etc. If you're going to have a game with a base game and separate premium upgrade, how are you going to get people to buy the upgrade? One way is to include maps and gamemodes. Obviously, this fragments the community so I think it's a bad idea. If the premium upgrade is only cosmetic, why have a premium version at all and instead just let people buy whatever individual cosmetic things they want? That leaves us with a premium upgrade for different weapons/vehicles/other things that will have an impact on other players. I think this is a slippery slope since no one will ever agree on balance, so it'll pretty much either be seen as a complete waste of money or pay to win because the items are OP. I'm comfortable with the current setup of being able to buy packs to unlock content early. Or buy gold battlepacks. As long as I get a chance to unlock things at some point, I don't care if someone else wants to spend money to get those things early. I would have an issue if I have to pay money to get any access to something. That's not cool and I don't think it would be a positive move for Battlefield.

It's an interesting question, and I don't think there's any one "right" way to do it. If there was, every publisher would be doing the same thing. However, for an established franchise like Battlefield, my opinion is you shouldn't focus on trying to squeeze every last dime out each game. Instead, make the game so popular that every release has more and more people playing it. Let everyone play with their friends no matter what, and if you need more cash, give people things that don't affect other players.

  3. I got my ass handed to me last night on the small Conquest server. I can't tell if it was a direct result of the high tick rate, just an off day, or if the kids watching Netflix had an impact. I suspect it might have been a combination of the tick rate and Netflix. I've been meaning to upgrade my Internet, so I don't have a ton of bandwidth to begin with. I'm guessing there might've been a bottleneck with gaming + streaming. However, one thing I didn't notice was the one shot kills from regular guns. I certainly lost most of my head-to-head gunfights, but it never felt like someone one-shotted me with a pistol or something. That always annoyed the crap out of me.

Overall, if the server can handle it, the high tick rate seems like the better option. Most of the people I saw talking about it in chat either felt a difference or didn't. I don't recall anyone saying it was worse. Hopefully the servers continue to perform well, and I think there's a big patch coming soon which could really make things awesome.

  4. so for those that don't read patch notes, how are high tick rates servers different from standard servers?

Here's some info I borrowed from a PDF I saw somewhere:

    WHAT IS HIGH TICKRATE?

Normally, servers in Battlefield 4 run at 30hz (30 updates a second or a delay of 33ms). With this change, we allow the servers to run faster than that. All the way up to  44hz! (144 updates in a second or a delay of 6.9 ms!). As you can imagine, this has a pretty significant effect on how the game plays, feels and how precise it is. In general, a higher tickrate significantly improves on and in some cases fully removes netcode issues such as:

  5. There's a few things I still haven't figured out, and thought I'd ask here. I suppose I could go Google answers myself, but what's the fun in that?

I just unlocked the AA mine. How do I use it? I set it up, but nothing seemed to happen. It has the little controller box thing like a RAWR, so it the mine something I need to control manually? I was hoping it was something I could just set up somewhere and let it take out helicopters.

How do you collapse the middle building in Siege of Shanghai? I was playing the other day and someone on my team said the building needed to come down, but I have no clue how to make that happen.

Specific to ATR servers: the VIP donation to bypass the wait queue, does that mean it'll kick someone off the server? There are a lot of times when there's some people waiting to get in, so does it put you at the front of the line to get in, or does it force a spot open immediately?

How do you form a squad with someone on your Origin friend list? If a friend joins the same server as me, is there a way to make it so we stay together after each match?

Are the things that laser designate only useful if you can communicate with someone on your team to make sure they have a weapon equipped that can track laser designations? I think this is more of an experience question, but I haven't been using the PLD or whatever it is because I'm not sure if anyone will utilize it. Is there normally someone who can, or is it better to leave that stuff alone unless I have a full squad that's planning on it?

I'm just doing my best to improve and be helpful to my team. Any advice is appreciated, even if it doesn't pertain to my specific questions.

  6. I know I'm the new guy, but thought I'd throw this out there. If you wanted to add expansion maps to the Best of TDM server, it wouldn't hurt my feelings. I'm not familiar enough with all the new maps to know what would be small enough for TDM, but I figure there's gotta be a couple nice ones. I'm also not sure how BF4 servers work, so I don't know if you're limited in the number of maps you can rotate.

  7. Teamspeak can be difficult for me. I'm not very talkative to begin with and tend to get focused when I play games, making me even less vocal. Plus I have a couple little kids that don't always understand the concept of being quiet. ;) I might try to jump on though if people don't mind me lurking.

I actually had a good time in the other modes too. I felt bad for my teammates, as I had no clue what I was doing and probably made it harder to win. I believe at one point I was somehow made squad leader and I think a squadmate was asking for orders, but I couldn't figure out how to issue them (and even if I could, I wouldn't have the slightest idea of what order to give). It'll all come together eventually, but at the moment I'm about as nooby as they come. That being said, since the modes were all confined to smaller maps, I didn't feel like I had to run forever to get into action. It was kinda neat changing modes and keeping things fresh. I'll most likely stick to that server, since it has all the expansions active (from what I could tell anyway) and I don't have to worry about playing large scale maps which is what I'm really trying to avoid (at least until I learn how to control vehicles).

I wonder if someone could let me know how seeding works. I know when I first started on the server, there were just a couple people and I think almost everyone was an ATR member aside from me. Didn't take long to get other players, and I think the last couple games might not have had any ATR members. If I come to play and no one's on, will I be able to just "sit there" somehow and have it fill up again, or does an ATR member need to do something to get it working?

  8. Had a few really good games on one of your servers this evening. I've had BF4 for awhile, but haven't played a ton. Just upgraded to Premium yesterday, so I wanted to find servers that had the new maps but also were more focused on the non-vehicle modes. To be honest, I thought your server was TDM only which is why I got on. Turns out it had a mix of modes going on. Still had a blast though. I was my normal bullet-sponge self and spent most of my time just trying to figure out how to play the other modes, but at least I got to see new maps.

Not sure if you normally have a lot of people on or if the server will need to be seeded every night, but hopefully it'll stay popular as I rather enjoy the small maps. One of these days maybe I'll get into the large scale stuff, but at the rate I die huge maps are a burden seeing as I can't work the vehicles and being on foot means I spend half the game running. If I want to do a running simulator I'll go back to DayZ.

    Cheers!
