  1. Q u o t e: I remember running out of shards doing a five man once. "Sorry, I have to run out and kill some mobs for a bit." How I miss the days of being the Healthstone vendor in Molten Core! View the full article
  2. Q u o t e: Guild achievements, levelling, rewards, etc. are not going live until the 4.0.3 "The Shattering" patch or another as yet unannounced patch, correct? Correct. While much of the UI architecture for guild leveling, rewards, and reputation is currently in place and will be visible in the guild pane, players won't actually be able to access those features until 4.0.3 or later (e.g. Cataclysm). 5. Talents and any training any spells etc that need trained. I don't want a repeat of heading off to do things and realizing in the middle I have not talents! (Not that I've done that before of course...) View the full article
  6. This is the largest patch we've ever released to date. There's a lot of new data being pushed and a lot of system changes as well. We do what we can to anticipate the time it takes, but sometimes additional work needs done to ensure that everything will be working as smoothly as possible once it's all brought live. We would much rather try to err on the side of caution when it comes to taking extra time to make it all work. View the full article

  8. Originally a magic brought to the citizens of Azeroth by the Highborne, reforging will provide a new means for players to customize their gear in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. NPCs offering reforging services will be located in all major cities, ready to assist in customizing items by altering the stats they provide. Players can use reforging to modify an item's stat values, or to undo any previous changes and allow different customization choices. Check out View the full article
  9. Q u o t e: While it's nice to get an update, that's going to run smack up against those of us with Virtual Ticket starting on October 13. Hope there is an allotment of goodies left over for us. The two sales were always going to be separate but we are definitely keeping this in mind and will be preparing accordingly. View the full article
  10. We are still in the process of resolving the issues that are preventing the 48-hour sale from beginning today. Therefore, the sale will be pushed back by one day to avoid further confusion on the starting time. The sale will begin tomorrow, Sunday, October 10, at 10:00 am PDT and will now run 60 hours and end at 11:59 pm PDT on Tuesday, October 12. Thank you for your patience and we look forward to seeing you with your items at BlizzCon! View the full article

  12. 2010 Global Writing Contest - Announcement of Announcement! During today's daily feeding/washing ritual, the handlers for the 2010 Global Writing Contest judges were able to coax them into revealing - between the constant wailing and gnashing of eyelids - that the list of winners for the 2010 Global Writing Contest will be finished on Monday, October 18th. Until then, you are allowed to slow down your hammering the Refresh button to once every other second. View the full article
  13. We're still in the judging phase and will keep you informed of when we have chosen our winner. We've had a lot of great entries to sift through so it's taking some time. View the full article
  14. Q u o t e: They did it because people have dozens of mounts of varying looks and it kinda sucks that they don't use them because they aren't as fast as the one or two particular 310% mounts they have. Pretty much this. We want people to be able to pick and choose the mount (or mounts) they enjoy using without feeling like they're being penalized. There are a lot of different mounts to choose from and for some people, that mount they got awhile back that was so awesome, lost its luster after that next fast mount came out. View the full article
  15. Q u o t e: Yes they will scale This. You'll have to pay for the skill, but your mount speed will increase with your riding skill level. This way, you can pretty much roll through all of your favorite mounts without feeling as if you are neglecting any of them. View the full article
  16. I believe the quest chain will still work in patch 4.0.1. It will definitely be gone when the world shatters though. View the full article
  17. Ghostcrawler is a who not a what. As for his job description and what he and his team do, you can read it in his own words from a much older thread here- http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=14134474969&sid=1&pageNo=6#111 Q u o t e: We generally use "developer" to mean someone who works on the game itself, as opposed to people in other departments of Blizzard who support production of the game. Blizzard is a place where feedback is very important though, so people throughout the company still tend to have a pretty big impact on game design. I am a game designer, and specifically I am the lead systems designer for WoW. Game designers are not artists or programmers, but we use the tools developed by the programmers and the assets created by the artists to get content into the game. Programmers make the game run, artists make it beautiful, but it is the designer's job to make it fun. (Though again, Blizzard collaborates more than many studios do and I spend a lot of time talking to programmers or artists about class, mechanics or even achievement design.) I think a lot of players mistake me for a CM because I tend to post a lot more than most WoW designers. Mostly, I just don't sleep so it lets me play WoW, work on it during the day and still have time to post. Game balance is one of the most controversial aspects of any multiplayer game, and I benefit from being able to engage the community directly. Systems design specifically is everything that is not level, story, quest or encounter design. My team handles everything from classes to mechanics to items to trade skills to achievements to UI design, and that includes the game balance. I do want to stress that we are a team. We come to a consensus on every major change to the game. I put enormous faith in the team to make the right call and keep any of us individually from doing something stupid. Blizzard is in a position to be able to attract and retain the best talent available in this industry. Many of them are much better game designers than I will ever be. Mostly I try and stay out of their way. A great many of them read the forums. Everything you type is seen by silent blues. I see people reading the forums when I drop by their office. We talk about what they have read all the time. These guys care passionately about doing the right thing and making the game as good as they can. Your opinion is extremely important to them. Just keep that in mind every time you post. View the full article

  19. Q u o t e: I put in Shackle. Thought we got all these nice CC options so that we wouldn't have to resort to OTing and kiting. It's not about "having to resort" to something so much as making sure you utilize all of your options to overcome the challenges before you. I'm sure we've all had that moment when everything went haywire, the CC got broken etc, and from there you had to punt to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat by getting creative with what abilities you have at hand.
